Environmental Sciences Research Institute Inc. has won a $5.2 million contract to provide the New York Department of Motor Vehicles with an accident location system, company officials said Aug. 28.

The contract is for three years with options to renew for two more years.

Under the contract, ESRI will replace the department's outdated accident location system with a modern geographic information system that will serve both DMV and the New York Department of Transportation. The shared system will use GIS technology to code the location of accidents in the state.

DMV and DOT share responsibility for locating and analyzing accidents on New York roads and for making the data available for state highway safety applications.

ESRI of Redlands, Calif., is a leading developer of GIS software used to create and label digital maps, publish maps on the Internet and build related databases. The company has more than 2,500 employees and has annual revenue of about $370 million.
