The National Nuclear Security Administration decided no other contractors are qualified for the type of specialized systems engineering work it needs.
The National Nuclear Security Administration has awarded a sole-source contract potentially worth $250 million to the Aerospace Corporation, a nonprofit research organization.
The contract covers systems engineering and technical analysis services in support of nuclear security programs.
In a Sam.gov notice posted Monday, NNSA said it went through a sources sought process and decided Aerospace was the only contractor capable of providing the services after going through a sources sought process.
Nine companies responded to the request for information, but only one company filed a response when the agency posted its limited source justification in September.
The unnamed company was rejected because it had no relevant experience working with the federal government and no past performance relevant to the Energy Department, which NNSA is a part of.
The contract will support ongoing systems engineering integration work across NNSA's defense programs.
NNSA said Aerospace is the only organization that responded with the required technical expertise, security clearances and past performance related to nuclear nonproliferation work.
