Tim Hartman will transition into a senior advisory role with the company.

Longtime GovExec Chief Executive Officer Tim Hartman stepped down Tuesday after serving in that role for more than 12 years and clocking more than 25 years with GovExec and its former parent company, Atlantic Media.

Hartman will transition into a senior advisory role to support GovExec’s continued growth in the coming weeks, according to board Chairman Peter Goldstone. Hartman will be replaced by Dan McCarthy, who most recently served as the CEO of global insights firm Atheneum.

“We are deeply grateful to Tim for 25 years of leadership. He built the well-respected and premier platform that GovExec is today, and his vision and persistence led the company through an extraordinary business transformation,” Goldstone said in a statement. “We are grateful for Tim’s leadership and contributions.”

Hartman led GovExec’s spinoff from Atlantic Media in 2020 and subsequently presided over 14 acquisitions, integrating personnel, portfolios and capabilities to create a lead and intelligence platform along with the company’s digital media business. During his tenure as CEO, GovExec experienced a fivefold increase in growth.

“Guiding GovExec’s evolution into the public sector’s leading intelligence platform has been an extraordinary journey,” said Hartman. “By launching transformational AI tools and groundbreaking products, we have reframed how the government ecosystem of clients and decision-makers work together. I am deeply proud of what our team has built and confident in Dan’s leadership for our next chapter.”

McCarthy has more than 25 years of experience leading various information, data  and media businesses through complex transitions. At Taunton Press, McCarthy—who began his career as a reporter—led the shift toward digital subscriptions and e-commerce and later served as the CEO of Dodge Construction Network, where he doubled the company’s revenue through organic growth and a key acquisition. Most recently, through Gallarus Advisors, he served as CEO of Atheneum, restoring profitability.

“Dan brings deep experience helping information businesses sharpen their strategic focus, strengthen performance, and pursue growth,” Goldstone said. “He takes a data- and technology-first approach that will help us sharpen our value to clients and accelerate our organic and M&A-driven growth as GovExec enters its next phase of expansion.”

McCarthy said he’s eager to get to work.

"GovExec has earned a trusted position with government decision-makers and the companies that serve them,” McCarthy said. “I'm excited to work with and learn from this team to build on that foundation and accelerate growth.”
