WorldCom's woes make Georgia think twice about project bid

The state of Georgia may be forced to find more bidders for its huge outsourcing communications project if troubled telecommunications and Internet services giant WorldCom Inc. cannot sustain its bid, according to state officials and industry observers. WorldCom is leading one of two teams pursuing the Georgia Convergent Communications Outsourcing, a 10-year deal worth $1.87 billion. The other team is led by Electronic Data Systems Corp.

Northrop Grumman-TRW deal creates $7 billion IT behemoth

Northrop Grumman Corp. and TRW Inc. finally concluded their months-long face-off with an agreement to merge, the two companies announced July 1. "Today's acquisition adds the last critical node of space to our robust and well-diversified defense platform and systems capabilities that operate on the ground, at sea and in the air," said Kent Kresa, chairman and chief executive of Northrop Grumman.

KPMG Consulting acquires Andersen consulting partners, staff

KPMG Consulting Inc. announced it has signed a definitive agreement to hire approximately 140 partners and 1,400 professionals and staff members from the U.S. business consulting operation of Arthur Andersen LLP. KPMG Consulting, based in McLean, Va., said it will pay approximately $63 million to complete the transaction.

EDS buys Loudcloud Web-hosting business

Electronic Data Systems Corp. will acquire the managed Web-hosting business and license the company's IT automation software in a $63.5 million deal.

McDonald Bradley acquires Domain Technologies

McDonald Bradley Inc., McLean, Va., has acquired Domain Technologies Inc. The terms of the deal between the two privately-held companies were not disclosed.

Covansys buys PDA

Covansys Corp., Farmington Hills, Mich., acquired PDA Software Services Inc. for about $16.5 million, expanding its IT outsourcing capabilities in the state market and the insurance industry.

Hadron wins NASA pact

Through its subsidiary, Analex Corp., Hadron Inc., Alexandria, Va., won a $163.7 million contract with NASA to provide engineering services for the Expendable Launch Vehicle Integrated Support program office at Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

Tier buys government firm

Tier Technologies Inc., Walnut Creek, Calif., is acquiring Official Payments Corp. for $74.5 million in cash. Tier is paying $3 a share for the stock of Official Payments, Stamford, Conn. The deal is expected to close in August.

Veridian joins the IPO dance

Veridian Corp., Arlington, Va., saw its shares rise more than 13 percent June 5, its first day of trading on the New York Stock Exchange, closing at $18.15 a share. The company's initial public offering price was $16.

General Dynamics wins Canadian contract

The Canadian subsidiary of General Dynamics Corp., Falls Church, Va. has won a $128 million contract the to supply and integrate a new data management system for the Canadian Department of National Defence.
