Tanya Pemberton will start in the role on Oct. 18 and lead a 4,800-employee organization that operates a federally-funded research-and-development center focused on space.

The Aerospace Corp. has appointed a new chief executive from within its own ranks in Tanya Pemberton, who first joined the nonprofit organization in 2019 as a senior vice president.

Pemberton will succeed the retiring Steve Isakowitz on Oct. 18 and also brings two decades of government experience to the CEO role, Aerospace said Thursday. Isakowitz announced his plan to retire in March and has led the firm for nine years.

Aerospace operates a federally-funded research-and-development center focused on providing technical guidance and advice on all aspects of space. The firm’s U.S. government partners include Space Force, the National Reconnaissance Office, NASA and the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration.

Pemberton has worked as an executive vice president for the past two years and collaborated with Isakowitz to lead the 4,800-employee organization. In her prior senior VP role, she led Aerospace’s national systems group that included work with intelligence agencies on the acquisition and deployment of space technologies.

Her career in government includes tech leadership roles at NRO and the National Reconnaissance Office.
